Freely Battle 2026: Judge Loic's Feedback
After the first edition of Freely Battle 2026 at La Villette, judge Loic from DDF Crew (Belgium) shared his feedback on what stood out during the competition, and on what young participants can keep working on.
What Separates a Good Jumper From a Strong One
A Wide Range of Levels, and a Lot of Energy
Loic noted a big range in level among the participants: some freestyle jumpers already had real experience, while others were new to battles and still finding their way with the music.
What struck him most was the energy everyone brought, regardless of experience. He praised fresh battles where everyone went all in and had fun, calling out the respect it takes to step into a first battle.
For Loic, the answer comes down to one word, repeated three times for emphasis: "Musicality. Musicality. Musicality."
According to him, you can be a skilled dancer or a technical jumper, but the real next level comes from following the music, getting into that zone, and landing the small details and accents right on the beat.
This musicality, more than raw technique, is what makes the real difference today.
Practical Advice for the Next Battle
Loic's main piece of advice starts with a question every jumper should ask themselves: are you performing, or are you expressing?
He encourages young participants to stay true to themselves and practise on different types of music, including outside the ropes, every day, to find and truly own their style.
Two Drills Worth Trying
He shares two concrete exercises. The first is an isolation drill: on a single song, try using only your arms, then only your feet, then only your head, before focusing purely on hitting the accents.
The second is practising short, fun battles against training partners, just to build comfort ahead of real competition.
Once You're in the Circle
Once the battle starts, Loic's advice is simple: breathe. Take the time to really feel the music before jumping in, and prepare strong finishing moves in advance to end on a high note.
A Message to the Jumpers
Loic closes his feedback with a direct message to every participant: "Keep going!" He encourages them to connect with other jumpers and other styles, and reminds everyone of the essential: have fun and express yourself, because that's the whole point of Freely.
